When searching for a home builder, keep in mind what kind of home you are looking for. Are you a 2-story Colonial family, Ranch house, Cape Cod? Does the builder have a wide array of home designs? Will the builder work with you on design? Will the builder allow you to bring in your own plans and if so, is there a cost associated with that?
If you use one of the builder's plans how much customization are you allowed? Keep in mind that the more you customize, the more expensive and the more prolonged the process. It is always good to go in knowing what you want your final design to look like. Just bear in mind that if you take a model of the builders and try to customize it, some structural changes just may not be possible based on things like load bearing walls.
Another aspect of building a new home is the lot. Do you already own a lot? Will you be buying the lot from the builder? There are a number of things to keep in mind when choosing a lot but we will discuss that in a future post.
